Wired III: The Interactive Room
When I first saw that Wired III virtual reality set-up, I felt a strange feeling of deja vu. Then I remembered why that room looked so familiar:
As an engineering chick, I think this stuff is pretty cool. Also, the Wired III seems a lot more cost-effective than floor-to-ceiling monitors.
However, I'm really not a fan of spending time in virtual environments. Correction: I'm not a fan of how much time I spend in virtual environments. Facebook and Wikipedia and Youtube are distracting enough on a 2-D screen. The idea that 3-D simulations may become cost-effective enough for home use instead of just military or specialized job training actually makes me a little nervous. Plus, even more immersive virtual environments probably aren't going to help with America's obesity epidemic. All in all, while I applauded the technical know-how at work on the Wired III virtual room, I also felt a very strong urge to go outside and take a walk.
...and no, I did not actually go walk outside. I had already gone biking along the Hawthorne trail
today, though, so I think I'm good :-)
