From Spacewar to Halo

The evolution of video games over the past 50 years have been monstrous. I can't imagine getting hyped up to play the first video game ever created--- Spacewar! Just take a look at the difference from where we were 50 years ago to now. The difference is unfathomable:
From soundless, black and white pixels to a fully-equipped first person shooter game with all sorts of science behind it--- it's a leap of faith. However, the evolution is not a simple transformation from A to B. Although everything began with Spacewar, the advancement of technology has allowed us to create a far wider variety of games. Geeks' imagination just continues to flourish throughout this time for our benefit pumping out hit games like Golden Eye 007, Tetris, Asteroids, etc. Then after a period of time, a subculture of gamers was born. People begin to talk, voice out opinions, and thus, there are plenty of different video game genres out there now just like music. The only difference is music has always been open and welcomed by the public. Video games gave rise to a subculture of nerds, but times are definitely changing now. With the fast-pace growth of our technology, Warren Spector, creator of Deus Ex, states that game culture is becoming a mainstream media. In other words, games aren't just for geeks now, but a lot of them are more social-oriented now. This is true of the big three platform developers, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Everybody is fixed on the family factor. Indeed, gaming has developed tremendously over the past couple decades in almost all aspects whether it be graphically, conceptually, socially, or industrially. And we the public just get to sit back and enjoy the ride. Who else is getting Halo Reach on September 14th? Power to the gamers!

I definitely agree with you. Video game technology has changed since the simple arcade games. Most video games today have very complex storylines and gamplay. I remember when we used to play the classic Mario Bros game. All you had to do is hit the jump and movement keys, and you pretty much can beat the game in 2 hours.
