Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite

Day 'N' Nite by Kid Cudi was said in an interview to be a reflection on how he was feeling in his life at the moment. As you listen to the lyrics and compare them with the visuals, it is, although sometimes abstractly represented, an accurate rendition of the message he seems to be trying to convey. Before I saw the video, I assumed there would be some differentiation between day and night in the video, because of how much he talks about what happens "at night." However once watching it, it further cemented the caveat of his life, that there is no difference in day n' night, some things will never change, and it is just at night when he is finally able to free his mind.

The very basic idea of the title, "Day 'N' Nite," is a dichotomy similar to the constant oppositional comparisons he shows in the video, such as the couple walking and how they would appear versus how he sees them, or at least how he feels around them. The entire message of the visuals seems to be a reflection on how he experiences the world, whether it is a completely accurate representation or not, which may be why he used the inaccurate rendering technique of the hand drawn illustrations to show this. The constant change from reality to this fantasized cartoon world is probably a reasonable representation of how he is feeling as the self-proclaimed, "lonely stoner," as well. In the image of him walking down the yellow road, one might compare this to the "yellow brick road" of The Wizard of Oz, where both stories are about being "in search of" something, as mentioned in his lyrics.

In the end, I feel the images communicated his message clearly, "Day and night, The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night, He's all alone, some things will never change, The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night..."
