John Mayer - Half of My Heart
The video I picked was John Mayer's "Half of My Heart" because I had to watch it a few times to get what was going on. The song is about a guy telling a girl that all his life he's never really cared about anything until she showed up and changed everything, like when he says "Made a plan, stayed a man who can only love himself. Lonely was the song I sang, 'til the day you came. Showing me another way and all that my love can bring" But he has realized that he only loves this girl with half of his heart and knows that that won't be enough and she deserves better. The best he can do is "a shotgun wedding to a bride with a paper ring", meaning he'll marry her on whim and like a paper ring, it'll be a fragile bond. He has to tell her to move on by saying that "half of my heart's got a right mind to tell you that half of my heart won't do."
So basically in the video you have John Mayer dressed up in a tux at a bar looking depressed and singing the song. They also keep showing a church set up for a wedding where the people look confused and upset. You later find out that the wedding was cancelled when the guest start leaving, turning off the candles, pack up the wedding dress, etc. The first time I saw the video, I assumed that he had left the girl at the alter because the song talks about how he's not capable of loving someone and it's not fair to whomever he's singing to. However, after reading people's comments and re-watching the video a few times, it turns out that it was the girl that left John Mayer. I guess what really bothered me about the video was that the song would make you believe that he would be the one to leave the girl at the alter. I had first heard the song and then saw the video which is why I had a hard time believing that she had left him. The two biggest indicators that she left him are the fact that they packed up the wedding dress, meaning she never wore it, and that he has a note saying "I can't stop loving you" which is more then likely from her. Overall it's a good video that matches the song but not the way I thought it would. Maybe the girl realized everything he was trying to tell her before the wedding, which would kinda make sense since there is a female voice in the song.
