On John Cage and Indeterminacy
The avant-garde composer, John Cage, was many things but a great writer was not one of them. The writings, which were originally read aloud at a certain tempo, do not work in written format. Reading them to yourself is akin to reading sheet music. Some of the stories contained within the writings are mildly amusing, but their often "O Henry" endings, self referent ego stroking, and awkward punchlines keep them from being anything else but journal entries.
John Cage was a composer obsessed with time and chance. In spoken format where tempo and elements of indeterminacy could actually play a roll I am sure that the short stories may be an entirely different experience yet I still feel I would find their content lacking in transcendence .
