ENDING 1
My first ending for The Odyssey is the original ending that is told in the story.
After 10 long years of sailing back from Troy, Odysseus is finally able to his home in Ithaca, along with his son after the two managed to basically bump into eachother while the father was retelling his story to a friendly king. However, during his time returning home, Odysseus' palace became overrun by suitors trying to win the hand of Penelope for marriage and rule over Ithaca. For fear that he would surely be killed if he were to be spotted entering the Palace, Odysseus disguised himself as an old man and joined the group. What followed were a series of challenges created by Penelope (who had found out that Odysseus was part of the crowd) to find out who. One of these challenges was that whoever is able to tether Odysseus' bow (which only he is able to do) will be able to win her hand. After the challenges are finished, the king along with his son and some loyal guards steal all the weapons from the suitors and then proceed to slaughter them all. Afterwards, Odysseus reunites with his queen and the two live happily ever after.
ENDING 2
As Odysseus stepped off the boat and onto the docks of Ithaca, he could not help but smile brightly. Finally, he was home. The sounds and smell of the markets were intoxicating. Filling him with memories of his youth when he would run through the streets when escaping his lessons. Hearing stories from sailor far and wide about what they had seen, the Gods and monsters they encountered and fought. The market that greeted all who arrived, for either the first time, or simply returning home. and finally, after 20 long years he was home.
"Father," The king turned to his son, Telemachus, his pride and joy heir to his kingdom in due time. "Do not wander too far. Even though we are home, we must be careful, Mother's suitors likely have spies everywhere."
Odysseus smiled at his son's cautiousness, but also his wit. Though young, he knew of the dangers that are present even in their own home. They need to keep a low profile.
"Do not worry, my son, we will be fine. I am just eager to se-" Odysseus halted mid sentence. Searing pain overtook his chest. Dropping to his knees, one hand clawing at his chest to stop the pain while the other held his forehead, which felt as if it had a thousand shields being beaten by their weapons in unison.
"Father! No!" Telemachus vaulted off of the ship and onto the dock, rushing towards his collapsing father. Sliding down and placing an hand gently onto his back. "What's wrong? Tell me, what ails you?"
Between labored breaths, Odysseus managed to give a meek response, unfitting for a man such as him. "Th-the Curse of Calypso's home seems to have caught up with me after all these years. O-o-one c-c-c-can never leave the island........yet I have. I-it seems that my t-t-t-t-time is coming to a close."
Telemachus tired to speak as he got his father into a more comfortable position, but it seems that the gods would not allow it. But Odysseus, ever the clever man, knew what he was going to say and found one last breath.
"Do not grow sad....my son. I...I have lived a long and happy life.....one without fear....or regret. I am where I belong....home, in Ithaca. I can truly be a peace now. All I ask of you is to take my place. Be a kind......fair......just ruler. Take care of you mother...she needs......"
Before he could finish, Odysseus' eyes dimmed. The last bits of his soul left his body and headed to the underworld. But there was no pain, or sorrow.....simply happiness. He completed his journey, he is home.
ENDING 3
"Penelope! Penelope! I am home!"
Odysseus ran from the courtyard filled with the hacked apart bodies of the suitors. Dropping his weapons and stripping off his armor, he rushed to see his wife for the first time in almost 20 years. He was ready to see her again, to feel her silken hair and soft cheeks against his war torn hands.
He came to the door to his room and stopped, this was it....no turning back. He raised a fist and banged heavily on the door, a silly notion, asking for permission to enter his own bed room, but a notion that was appropriate given the circumstances. The door opened on it's own accord. Wasting no time, he rushed in, to eager to be told to enter. And before him, there she stood. Having not aged a day since he left, Penelope, in all her beauty. She smiled as he drew nearer.
"I....i have missed you so much my dear. These past 20 years were more than any man should ever have to endure, but i am finally done with it. Now, it is just you and me...here, in our bed room. My dear, oh how I have missed you."
He reached a hand to brush her cheek. For too long he wanted to be able to feel her delicate flesh against his own, However, when the tips of his fingers reached her, he did not feel the soft warmth of his wife cheek, but instead met with the sensation of burning coals. Shouting in pain, he drew his hand back and looked upon it. The tip of his finger had become blacked and blistered. Looking up, Odysseus could on watch in horror as his wife smiled one last time before all of her fleshed began to bubble and burn away leaving only a charred skeleton...still burning. The shouts of pain and suffering filled his ears. He looked around, he was no longer in his bedroom, or in Ithaca, but rather the deepest, darkest pits of Hades...the Fields of Punishment.
Dropping to his knees, he wept....he did not managed to survive the gaping jaws of Charybdous, and now he was doomed to suffer until the end of time.
