Projects Ideas?
I'm a fun of Id's Quakes. Because this game is a 3D shooter, there is not much interesting about interaction: WASD + mouse control.
Yet there is one element of the user interface in the first version of the game that is interesting for me. To choose the level and the episode that you want to play, you do not use a standard menu or drop down select. You actually control a 3D character and the door you choose to walk in identifies a difficulty level, and the next door identifies which episode of the game you are going to play. So the "menu" is a 3D scene.
There are other examples of using a 3D environment as an interface to a system. In several movies about "hackers", a character uses 3D virtual environment to "administrate" the system.
I have been sceptical about usability of that kind of interface in real life, yet I would like to investigate and, probably, create a prototype of an interface that uses a 3D environment as an interface to a system (I have not decided yet what kind of system it might be... may be just an operating system).
If you have interesting examples of 3D environments used as user interfaces, please, give me a link or a brief description.
Have a good semester!
