MIDTERM RE-SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Hello class
I began reviewing the submissions for the Storyboard projects for the MIDTERM for the teams today.
Because we lost three full days i am going to extend the DEADLINE for the submissions to the Wednesday that we return
I am also requesting a meeting with ALL the producers if possible on MONDAY or TUESDAY before Class Wednesday for sure [Even if this is a telephone conversation]
Plain and simple. Currently there is only ONE submission that approaches a passing grade.
I requested that the PRODUCER be the person to submit the work to me, on the blog and to my email.
I do not want to see your script that has been copied from a game.
I do not want to wade through jpegs that you downloaded and placed without context on a google drive.
Producers:
Please use this as a checklist. I mentioned these things in lecture for TWO HOURS TWO times. So i will not accept "You did not tell us what you wanted" as an excuse. When i lecture i am expecting that SOMEONE from the team is taking notes from now on that will be the generalist and i will expect notes as minutes from now on or the teams will suffer participation, i always pause so students can photograph the objectives when i lay them out. As of now only one team has a passing grade.
but because of the SNOW DAYS that have mitigated some of our meeting times i am offering you this as a
SAFE SET OF OBJECTIVES for The storyboards. And now it is REQUIRED for me to grade your project.
DO NOT HURRIEDLY TRY TO SEND me ANYTHING until you have met with your team and constructed PROPER STORYBOARDS.
Therefore i urge you ALL to review the current submissions [Or Lack Therof] and i will NOT accept any submissions without the following:
SETTING
TIME PERIOD
STYLE
CHARACTERS
DRAMATIC ARC [FREYTAGS TRIANGLE]
this should all be in paragraph form with explanations and the story person should have fleshed this out.
ESTABLISHING SHOT
CLIMAX
DENOUMENT
You could have made quick business of this with SL [so many of you have done fabulous on the movies i asked you to analyze, apply that to your storyboards]
Examples of each. I want to SEE WHAT I AM GOING TO BE SEEING ON THE SCREEN. You can download jpegs but they need to be placed into CONTEXT by you as artists as teams of designers, please do not insult me by linking movie posters.
STORYBOARDS SHOULD BE GRAPHICALLY SOPHISTICATED, they should be designed and reflective of your teams/story
I urge you to [EVEN IF THEY ARE HAND DRAWN] to COLOR THEM IN. I have seen sketches and they are good now PLACE THEM IN CONTEXT.
USE PHOTO SHOP, Paint, TOONBOOM, Sketch etc. You are digital media artists and designers. All the tools at your disposal and i have only seen one team actually satisfy ANY OF MY REQUESTS. This will not bode well for your grades.
Consider:
MONTAGE [TIME PASSING] A song that is reflective of your story, Video snippets, Snapshots from SecondLife, screen grabs from Game that you like [use fraps, Quicktime or other screen recorders to ADD to the storyboards. Add sophistication. If you blow this project off it will be like dropping a nuclear weapon on your grade.
ALSO
I expect that there will be a CLEARLY STATED
TAKE-AWAY - MESSAGE:
META NARRATIVE
You will write this down in a paragraph, assign it to your generalist, story person etc,
The programmer should be doing screen grabs
Graphics person drawing and arranging the Boards themselves
As of now i have seen ONLY ONE submission that even approaches this.
ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE REQUIRED!!!
You all did Fabulous on identifying things in the examples i showed in class and making the connections that i want you to start to put in your stories.
I also was VERY clear and told you i do not expect that your first try would be perfect so i expected and gave you the opportunity to USE a FAIRY TALE as a VERY SAFE BET to make a Interactive story. I do not want to see a copy and pasted script. I want to see STORYBOARDS.
in Phase two will be you proposing the adding of the IXD portions of the story. Where will the Players or Reader or whoever change/add/immerse into the story. We still have a long way to go and if i do not approve your story boards your team will receive a C for the midterm and you will be re-assigned to another team. Please do not make me resort to firing team members.
THIS IS AN ELECTIVE. You all agreed to my requirements. I asked you multiple times if what i was asking fro was fair and you all said YES. Now i need you to live up to your end of the bargain. I spent money on netflix several times because i wanted to show you all specific narratives and examples. I need to see MORE EFFORT FROM YOU .
OTHER STUFF we covered in class
characters backstory: Each character should have a short paragraph that tells me WHO they are and WHAT they are doing in the story and HOW they got where they are IN the story. This is the difference between a C- and a B. You did it for second life and 80% of you did fabulous APPLY THAT IN CONTEXT TO YOUR STORYBOARDS.
I urged you to assign these to team members and walked you through a Second Life tutorial to EASILY get screen shots of Color scenes [Castles, beaches etc.] This is the difference between a B- and a B/A
The More of these things that are included in the proposal storyboards the better your MIDTERM grade for the team will be.
