Favorite Story

A few years ago I was researching the english countryside for some location references when I discovered this story. I don't remember what the story was called but it was either a legend or a myth surrounding a church fire between 16th-18th century. I think what happened was that there was a man who cheated the devil in a card game so in retaliation the devil had lightning strike the church and catch on fire. I feel like there was another part of the story that before the church the devil stopped at an inn in the local town before heading to the church. I don't know why this story stuck with me but I have a feeling this story took place near Hound Tor which is another interesting story.
