A little more on Natural Motion

So I was reading Hilary's post of the TED talk from 2003 that discussed using artificial intelligence to stimulate how the human body moves/reacts to other objects. Hillary mentioned at the end of her post that it might be interesting to see what has actually come of this technology since 2003 when it was still relatively new.

A quick search on Google lead me to the companies webpage (which is linked to the title of this post).  I think that the technology they were introducing us to in the TED talk is now called Euphoria. Here is the description of the software from their website:

"Euphoria represents a step change towards creating truly believable characters, worlds and games. Instead of playing back canned animation, Euphoria uses the CPU to generate motion on the fly – by simulating the character’s motor nervous system, body and muscles."

The company boasts (with every right to) on their website that this particular software has been used in games as popular Grand Theft Auto 4, Red Dead Redemption, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

They also have a software program called Endorphin which can be used to create virtual stuntmen, something I think is also discussed in the TED talk. This program is geared more towards TV/film use. While the company claims this software has been used "in some of the biggest recent blockbuster movies" they don't name drop any film in particular which tells me the program hasn't quite caught on in Hollywood yet. However, the good news is that it looks like they're trying to spread the word to animators by offering a FREE downloadable version of this software called Endorphin LE AND it doesn't even have a time limit. Pretty generous if you ask me. If you're interested in giving it a try click here to download it.
